Wowowowow am I so excited (and nervous, but in the best way possible) to officially unveil Local to Legend.
Local to Legend is the podcast for local business owners like you, looking for the resources and tools needed to create a scalable, profitable, simply irresistible brand.
As a *major* fan of Guy Raz and “How I Built This,” I always tended to gravitate to the stories with local roots. There are thousands of success stories for e-commerce brands and tech start-ups and small businesses that service the country, and while those inspire me, I’m fascinated at the journey that starts in one community. I love connecting the dots between where they were then and where they are now and get into that messy middle.
It’s brands like Magnolia, Schmidt’s, Ben & Jerry’s, and Dry Bar that started in one specific location and became mega. (PS they are 100% on the dream list of future conversations, just want to put that out into the ether.) They all grew very differently outside of a local market and I believe their stories show us what’s possible for ourselves as local business owners.
So what makes local businesses different than small businesses? Local businesses have their own little ecosystems they work within. Some local business owners have the hopes of being sold to Unilever (Schmidt’s) or getting a HGTV show (Joanna Gaines) or being sold in Target (Ben & Jerry’s).
Others want to be a legend in their own community where people know, love, trust, and refer them all the time.
The cool thing about being a legend is it’s fairly subjective, right? We have legends in Des Moines (my home base), but they aren’t legends in the country. We have legends in the country, but they aren’t legends in the world. What I’ve come to discover in hundreds of conversations with local business owner is this: they desire more for themselves.
They want to expand, but how?
They want to grow their business, but what do they do?
They want to pivot, but what will that mean?
Local to Legend is about that conversation.
What does it take to become a legend? Who are the people who have grown successfully and what on earth did they do differently? How do I become the first (and only) option people think of and share when it comes to my industry?
We’ll share countless stories with local legends themselves, chat with experts in specific industries like brand design, public speaking, and mindset. You’ll also get solo shows where I’m sharing what’s working in the field right now. So if Instagram rolls something out that I know will help local business owners reach more people, you bet I’ll be on the pod ASAP dishing it to you.
I want local business owners to feel empowered, inspired, and capable every single day.
When local businesses flourish, our communities do too.
Why?
Local businesses are the reason some people visit our city. Local businesses are hiring other local people to work for them. Local businesses are working with other local businesses as vendors as they outsource jobs and tasks. Local businesses are generating sales tax dollars (typically) that are infused right back into your community.
Local businesses contribute to the fabric, the culture, the wellbeing of communities around the world.
Help local businesses thrive and the effect will trickle out to be felt by every single person.
My hope is that Local to Legend is the *go-to* spot for learning, growing, and becoming a legend.
